Why You Always Need to Check Shipping Prices When Looking at Deals

Like the new business cards I just ordered? A few weeks ago, I purchased a deal from Living Social which was $10 for $50 at Vistaprint. I had used referral credits (thanks everyone) so I didn't actually pay anything for the deal itself.

Prior to purchasing the deal, I spoke with someone from Vistaprint and she told me the deal didn't include shipping but that I could use it to pay for shipping so I thought I'd be able get stuff for completely free if I kept the purchase and shipping total under $50. Turns out she was incorrect in her information and Vistaprint's shipping is not always cheap.

I got my purchase as close to $50 without going over but the shipping for that purchase was going to be $19. That's when I noticed something on the top of the page. It stated that if I spent $25 over the value of my voucher, I'd get free shipping. I hadn't planned on purchasing $75 worth of merchandise but since I would already be spending $19 in shipping, an extra $6 for $25 worth of stuff seemed worth it.

I also discovered that I could add free items and have them included in that free shipping. I looked around the site and ended up getting lots of goodies, including stuff I can use for my students. For a total of $25.39 I got:
  • 250 free business cards
  • 2500 premium business cards
  • 1 "Great Job!" blue ink stamp
  • 1 "Keep It Up" blue ink stamp
  • 25 checks
  • 1 "Making Cents of It" pen

I did upgrade the free items to bring my total up, including changing the ink color of the free stamp and removing the Vistaprint logo from the business cards.  I tried a few different combinations of upgrades until I found the lowest price over $25.

The point of this post is to remind you all that a good deal can easily turn sour if you don't consider the final cost of a promotion. With online deals, check the cost of shipping. With in store and restaurant deals, make sure to see if the fine print mentions a minimum purchase.

Blogger on Vacation

Until July 8, 2011, I will be away from home with limited internet connection. I am very excited because I have not taken a real vacation in a while and it will be a great time. For one week, I will be relaxing on the beach and participating in tons of water activities. The only downside is that I will not have a computer. I will also not be able to use my phone because I don't want to rack up international charges so I really will be cut off from technology.

While I'm gone, I have scheduled articles and site reviews to post but I will need your help to share the deals. This post will remain on the top of the site until I return from the trip. Please feel free to link directly to deals or to your own site's post regarding the deals. Remember, you'll get points for daily comments so there's an additional motivation to post comments and share deals.

When I get back, I will get right back to posting wonderful deals for everyone. Have a great week!

When Free* Isn't Free

Free Stuff|How to find

Often times you will see companies offering free* products. However you'll notice it's not spelled correctly. That's right. If there is an asterisks after the word, it has a entirely different meaning. Many times that free* product comes at a cost. It can be shipping, handling, or lots of spam.

I have always hated deals with a hidden cost. Therefore, when I post a deal on Making Cents of It, I make sure it is free... not free*. What does that mean for you as a reader? If there is a free* product but you have to pay shipping, I list the shipping as the cost and will not list the deal as free.

Popular Types of Free* Deals

Just Pay Shipping & Handling - A free product sounds great until you factor in shipping. For example, the other day I went to buy free* business cards. When I went to check out of the website I had a choice of shipping options, the cheapest of which was $9.95.

Sign-Up for a Credit Card - I think the current commercials with Alec Baldwin "No, you get a hat" really shows how silly these promotions are. Each time I go to a sporting events, I see tables set up trying to get you to sign up for a credit card. In exchange they'll give you a free t-shirt. So how does that work? Here's a cheap t-shirt probably made in a third-world sweatshop and now you have an account with an annual free of $79 and an interest rate of 27%. Doesn't really sound worth it to me.

With Enrollment - When I was a kid I got six free* CDs (this was before MP3s) from a music club. In exchange I had to purchase four CDs at full price within a year. Full price was almost $20 for an album that was as low as $9 in stores. Plus the automatically sent me the "CD of the month" if I forgot to reply to the catalog that I didn't want it.

Now We Have Your Information - Can you say spam? Many of those companies that give you a free* gift then turn around and sell your information to marketers. You will get your gift, but you will also get tons of junk mail, emails, and possibility phone calls.

* This small, almost hidden asterisks completely changes the meaning of a word. If you see a small star after a word, search the page for the hidden meaning because it can be costly.

Site Review: Become.com

I recently learned about a new shopping comparison site called Become.com. I spent some time exploring the site and I was impressed with the organization of the site. Unlike comparison shopping sites I've seen in the past Become lists the prices from well known and respected companies. Using the search feature, you can look up an exact product or a type of product such as air conditioners or 4 ton air conditioners.

Another thing that is nice about the site is the images. If you know you're doing a remodeling job, you can search ceiling tile and see different patterns along with the store that carries it and its price. The one thing I didn't like about this site is that you can't compare models. If you type in zero turn mowers you will find a list of products, stores, and prices, but nothing comparing the different models.

This review was written on behalf of Become.com. All opinions are 100% my own.

100 Free Black and White Business Cards from Staples

Staples has a great coupon on their site right now. You can get 100 free business cards, as long as they're black and white. You must pick up your cards by June 18, 2011 and has a value of $19.99.

It comes in handy to have a basic business card when going somewhere to network. Business cards make you look more professional and ready to go.

These cards are also great to enter in "free lunch" raffles at restaurants. Just check the top of the fish bowl because sometimes they have a fine print saying that an advertising firm or business will pay for the lunch in exchange for listening to them speak.

Free Rentals at Blockbuster Express

Blockbuster Express currently has a few codes out for free movies. Each code is good for one night and you will still need to swipe your credit card in case you do not return the DVD. Here is a list of promotional codes that can be used once per credit card until June 17, 2011.

Note:  I do not have a Blockbuster Express machine near me, so I can not verify these codes through personal use.

Sponsored: Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
We all know that store brands often provide competitive quality while lowering the cost.  Products in the pharmacy are even better because they are all controlled by the FDA meaning you know they are safe to take.

Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products are great to keep around the house because they come in all different forms.  Almost all name-brand products have a cheaper generic form.  I use to be skeptical but I realized that if I take generic prescriptions, why not take generic OTCs?  Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products are a great way to save money while not sacrificing quality.  Most have the exact same active ingredient as the name-brand counterpart.

What I find really cool about Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products is the Walgreens Way to Well Fund™.  When you purchase their brand, they will make a donation to your local community.  Donation amounts can reach $3 million so it's nice to be included in helping your community.

The Walgreens Way to Well Fund™ will provide free preventive health tests as well as other health and wellness services and education to local communities. Some of those services will include preventive health tests through the National Urban League Health & Wellness Tour and vouchers redeemable in select stores.

While I was not lucky enough to be able to help you all purchase some of these great products, other bloggers were.  Head over to Social Spark to see a list of blogs that will have Walgreens gift cards for giveaways. Advertisement

Possible Free Whopper at Burger King from Directv

There is a rumor circulating the internet that anyone with Directv can flip to channel 111 and watch an interactive Burger King ad. After five minutes, you'll be able to get a coupon for a free whopper. After fifteen minutes, you can get three free whoppers. The coupons will be mailed to your billing address and you need your phone line hooked into the cable box.

I don't have Directv and I can't find this deal online from with Burger King or Directv so I can't verify this promotion. If you have Directv, please leave a comment if you have flipped to channel 111 and it works. Thank you!

Confirmed: Jennifer (On the Making Cents of It Facebook Page) Says...
I did this earlier...(it made me very hungry!) but you watch for 5 min and get 1 coupon, you then watch for 10 more min and get another coupon..then finally you watch for another 15 min and you get the third. you have to have a phone line hooked to the your DTV box & you really have to watch the Whopper, because a box pops up several times, to see if your still watching and you have to press a key on the remote, a different key each time...I am thankful I didn't have Smell-o-Vision lol

Update: I finally found an official press release for the free Whopper at Burger King from Directv.

Riding the Cloud: Guide to Online File Storage

Free Cloud Storage

Recently more companies have been coming out with cloud storage and you might be wondering a few things.

What is a cloud?
Cloud storage is a model of networked online storage where data is stored on multiple virtual servers, generally hosted by third parties, rather than being hosted on dedicated servers. (Wikipedia)
Basically, a cloud is online storage which allows you to upload your files and they are stored on the companies server. Some companies use multiple servers so your files are still safe if they have an issue with one.

Why should I use a cloud?
Using a cloud is a smart idea because it gives you added security that your files won't be lost if something happens to your computer. A cloud can be used as your main storage, or just as a back-up. I personally keep my pictures on a cloud server. I have a friend that is writing a novel and he saves it on a cloud.

Another benefit of cloud storage is that you can save the file on computer A and open it on computer B. This is great if you're like me and get to work only to realize you left the document on your printer at home.

How much does it cost?
The biggest road block in using cloud storage use to be the cost. Luckily, we know that there are always ways to get things for free and storage space is another example of how shopping around for deals can result in little out of pocket expenses.

How do I decide which company to use?
Depending on your need and how much you are willing to spend, there are a few good options to look into. Below are my favorite clouds along with a quick description and the pro and cons. I have also included how much storage each will provide you for free. That's right, most clouds provide a basic account for free. If none of the services offer enough storage you can always open accounts at different companies. I use one for my work files and a different company for my personal files.

Is it safe?
As with anything on the internet, nothing is 100% safe. We've all read in the news about major companies being hacked. That being said, I've never had any problems with the files I've stored on any of these sites.

Amazon - Amazon has recently rolled out a cloud server in association with their digital content store. You get a basic 5 GB for free and that can currently be upgraded to 20 GB for free when you purchase an MP3 album. I personally like the MP3 storage because I can play my music from work or home. Purchases are automatically backed-up in your cloud but you can still download them to your computer for iTunes. Amazon will allow you to upgrade up to a 1,000 GB storage plan and the prices are some of the lowest around. If you need 100 GB, you'll pay $100 per year. Remember, a 5 GB storage is free. To upload your files, you will have to manually open your cloud on Amazon and upload individual files.

- I personally like Dropbox for the ease of use. Their free account is only 2 GB but I needed to clear my files off the work computer before turning it in at the end of the school year. Dropbox allows you to download a free program which creates a folder on your desktop. Any file dragged into that folder is automatically uploaded to your cloud for back-up. It's extremely easy to back-up multiple files at once. Since I only had basic documents to transfer, 2 GB was plenty of space. Another nice thing about Dropbox is that you get additional free storage (up to 8 GB) for referring new members. Dropbox is more costly for upgrades but I like the automatic syncing. If you need 100 GB, you'll pay $19.99 per month or $199 a year. If you are a student, you can earn double for your referrals. After you enroll, head over to the Dropbox edu link to earn up to 16 GB for referrals. You must already have an account before completing the student upgrade.

iDrive - iDrive is similar to Dropbox because it allows you to download a program which makes syncing as easy as dragging a file into a folder on your desktop. Free storage begins with 5 GB and you can earn an additional 50 GB of free storage through their referral program. The only thing I really don't like about iDrive is possibility an error on my part. A few months ago they had offered a promotion for a free $10 iTunes gift card. I never got the gift card and I never got responses to email follow-ups. iDrive offers different upgrade packages including personal and business. The 100 GB business account is $199.50 per year. The personal account only has one size, 150 GB for $49.50 a year. I can't figure out the difference between the personal and business accounts.

Google - Google's cloud isn't actually a cloud in the sense of the other sites. Google has tons of different serves that can store and save all your files. Google Docs will save your documents such as Word, Excel, PDF, Powerpoint, and others. Google Picasa will store your photos. Google Music, which is still in beta testing, will allow you to upload your music. All of Google's features are free.

For the purpose of comparing apples to apples, I selected to price the 100 GB plan on each site. Prices were obtained on June 6, 2011. If you are reading this post through an archive, please note that prices can change. See the individual sites for current pricing.

5 Point Code for Disney Movie Rewards

There is a new promotional code for Disney Movie Rewards in the newsletter. You can either click the link in your newsletter or enter the code Y7ZE67KL2G for 5 points. Don't do both because it is the same code and can lead to your account being locked if it happens too often.

Side note: Did you know that the Disney Movie Rewards might be ending this summer? While looking something else up in the FAQs, I found this:
The Program begins at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) on October 3, 2006 and is scheduled to end at 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31, 2011. Codes may be entered beginning 12:00 a.m. ET on October 3, 2006 until 11:59 p.m. ET on July 31, 2011. Individuals will be able to redeem points beginning 12:00 a.m. ET on October 3, 2006 until 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31, 2011.
Hopefully we'll learn that it's not true. However, if it is I recommend starting to decide what prizes to order. I'm sure they will be running out if it is truly the end. I am going to do some more research and keep you posted.

Shared Reading: Florida Couple Forecloses on Bank

I never knew this was possible but you really need to root for the little guy that took on the greedy bank and won.

A few months ago a couple received documents claiming that the bank was foreclosing on their house. The couple fought the foreclosure but this one had an interesting twist. Not only did the couple NOT owe the bank any back payments on the house, they never had a mortgage in the first place because they bought the house with cash.
The case went to court and the homeowners were able to prove they didn't owe Bank of America anything on the house. In fact, it was proven that the couple never even had a mortgage bill to pay.

A Collier County Judge agreed and after the hearing, Bank of America was ordered, by the court to pay the legal fees of the homeowners', Maurenn Nyergers and her husband.
Five months after going to court, the bank had still not paid the couple so their lawyer took the next step. He seized the banks assets.

Gotta love a financial story where David slays Goliath. It's also a valuable lesson in keeping documents of everything. When the couple took the bank to court, they were armed with canceled checks and other paperwork documenting that they had paid for the house and therefore did not take out a mortgage.

Keep a copy of all your documents in two locations. This way if something happens you have a back-up set. Many people keep one at home and one at work.
