Review: Gym-Pact

Do you need motivation to exercise? After seeing a news report about ways to motivate yourself, I decided to try a few. Please check out my introduction fitness post for a list of all these reviews. This is a personal review of the Gym-Pact. All opinions are 100% mine.

Gym-Pact is a new fitness craze that has begun in Boston but looks like it could possibly spread if the popularity increases. Since I do not live in Boston, I can't tell you about personal experience but I wanted to let you know that it was out there.

Basically, Gym-Pact has made arrangements with a few gyms to provide discounted memberships to clients in exchange for commitments. I like the idea that you design your own plan. Sticking to it will result in an extremely discounted gym membership while failure will result in fines. The fines paid by members that don't stick to the commitment are what covers the membership fees for members that stick with it.

As a member, if you successfully fulfill your commitment, you enjoy great discounts on a fitness membership that you actually use. If you fall short of your commitment, a motivational fee is charged for each day missed that week to motivate you to get back on the fitness track. Members can choose both the number of days and the motivational fee, with a minimum of one day per week and $10 paid each missed day.

They have a FAQ page to answer all major questions but I could not find a price chart. It looks to me like you might not pay anything except the fines. You can sign up for a month or a six month plan. If you sign up for the six month plan you are allowed a one week break without penalty. The FAQs also mentioned that doctors notes would be accepted if you had a medical reason to end your participation in the pact.

If you are motivated this is a great way to save money on a gym membership. However even just missing one workout can end up costing you more. If you live in Boston then you need to make sure you are ready for the commitment because failure to workout will end up costing you a lot of money on this plan.
