Free Sample Pair of Hearos Earplugs

Hearos is currently giving 1,000 free pairs of earplugs away each day starting at 12pm (est).  I personally wear earplugs whenever I go to a concert, but there are lots of reasons to keep a pair handy.

Money Making Deals on Video Games

These two deals have to be some of the greatest deals I've seen in a while. You can make a profit by buying and selling video games.

Amazon currently has Your Shape for the Wii on sale for  $18.50, which by itself is a great price, around $50 everywhere else.  If you trade it in to Best Buy, you will get a Best Buy gift card for $25 or a check for $16.  If you have any upcoming purchases at Best Buy, this is a great way to get some extra money towards your purchase.

Another deal through Amazon is Glory of Heracles for Nintendo DS.  This game is priced at $10.99 but has two promotions attached to it.  The first promotion is for $10 off a future video game purchase on Amazon and the second promotion is $5 credit for MP3 purchases.  To make this even better, you can then trade the game in to a used game store.

Shared Reading: Best Sunscreen (Surprising Results)

Today is Memorial Day, so I found this article only fitting to share as pools and beaches across the nation officially open for the summer.  Consumer Reports rated the top sunscreens and the results were interesting.  They also prove that high price doesn't correlate to high quality.

These four -- all sprays -- provided "very good" UVA protection, "excellent" UVB protection, and met their SPF claim even after 80 minutes in the water. Plus, the Up & Up sunscreen was rated a CR Best Buy -- a tag awarded to products that both perform well and come at a reasonable price.

I am not a member of Consumer Reports so I cannot see the entire list and scores, but here are the top four:
  • Up & Up Sport Continuous SPF 30 (Target)
  • Walgreens Sport Continuous SPF 50
  • Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous SPF 30
  • Aveeno Continuous Protection SPF 50

At an outside lab we assessed how well each product blocked UVA and UVB rays and how well their claimed sun-protection factor, or SPF—a measure of UVB sunburn protection—lasted on volunteers who soaked in water.

See the full article at AOL Health or Consumer Reports.

The top ranked sunscreen was a store brand which shows that you can save money without sacrificing quality.  Most store brands do have quality guarantees.  In addition there are rumors (only rumors) that some store brands are made in the same factories as the name brands.

Whatever your plans this summer, remember to stay safe and have fun.

50% Off Papa Johns for Memorial Day

Today only, May 30, 2010, participating Papa John locations will be offering 50% off orders of $20 or more.  Just order online using the promotional code CUSTOMER50.  The promotional website says online or in stores, but when I've tried ordering over the phone with promotional codes they seem to act confused in the store.  Online ordering can be used for in store pick-up or delivery so it will just save the confusion.

Since it is off a minimum $20 purchase, you must buy at least two pizzas or one pizza with breadsticks and other sides.

20% Off Your Entire Purchase at Michaels

Tomorrow only, May 31, 2010, from 9am until 1pm you can get 20% off your ENTIRE purchase at Michael's Craft Stores.  This is good coupon since unlike their usual deals because it includes sale items.

$1.50 Off Any Wholly Guacamole

Wholly makes great guacamole, salsa, and queso which can be found in your produce department near bagged lettuce (at least at more store).  Right now on their website is a coupon worth $1.50 off any variety.  This seems like a great coupon because it's just a JPG on their site which means you can print multiple copies.

The link above goes directly to the coupon, but when I tried to find it from the homepage, I was lead to the Avocado Challenge.  I filled out the form and will let you know if the email coupon I receive is identical to the direct link or different once I receive it.

The only thing I'd worry about is that some stores might claim it's fake.  When I printed it out, it does look like slightly like it was copied from a newspaper.  If the store gives you problems, be polite and just inform them the coupon comes directly from wholly.com (which it does).

Free Subscription to Car and Driver

Just in time for father's day, you can order a free subscription to Car & Driver through freebizmag.com.  You must qualify for this offer as with all the free subscriptions I post.  There was no number of available subscriptions listed in the email this time so I'm not sure how long this offer will be available.

Possible Free Listerine at Target

There is a coupon online for $2 off Listerine Whitening Rinse.  The shelf label at my Target said $5.97, but when I ran it under the price checker and as rumored the price is actually $1.98.  Therefore, the final cost after the coupon is FREE.  This price is for the 16 ounce bottle but you can print the coupon twice.

Free Rayovac Batteries

Back in March, I told you about free batteries.  The offer has reset, so you can print a $1 coupon from Rayovac's Facebook page.  Target often has Rayovac batteries in their dollar section so you can end up with free batteries.

I Signed Up for SocialSpark! (again)

Socialspark_small

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hey everyone!

I just signed up for a site called SocialSpark.  SocialSpark will be setting me up with sponsors to offer you all great deals and giveaways. Occasionally you will see sponsored posts that link to SocialSpark. I promise to give you an honest opinion about anything I write in these sponsored posts and clearly mark them as sponsored. One of their current giveaways is shown on For the Mommas blog. This blogger was given a Fandango giftcard to give a reader in exchange for posting the trailer for the upcoming film Date Night.

Signing up for SocialSpark was easy to do and I recommend it to any bloggers out there. All you need to sign-up is a blog and an email address. Simple right? I’m still waiting on them to approve my account and then I will be able to provide you with great opportunities. Hopefully the approval procedure is as simple as the application process.

When I applied, I was asked questions about the blog. I gave them a description and keywords that described Making Cents of It. These keywords will help them link me with the best sponsors to share information with you. I can’t wait to get started with offering you all great deals and giveaways.

Unfortunately I was not approved because the blog must be at least ninety days old.  Therefore, I have replied now that we've been around longer.  Hopefully this time they will accept me.

As I have mentioned before, if I make a sponsored post you will be made aware that the post is sponsored. I promise to always give you my honest opinion and to verify any information I post on Making Cents of It.

Visit my sponsor: I Signed Up for SocialSpark!

Edit: It seems that although they have now recognized that Making Cents of It is 90 days old, they did not approve this post because I originally submitted it on a different date and then made the post a "draft" when denied to repost at the 90 day mark.  I have sent an email to their customer service and am waiting to hear back.  Lesson learned?  Let their post get lost in the background of all the new posts because they want that time stamp more than people to read it.  I will keep you posted on if we will be able to get some cool sponsors here.

Money Saving Tips for the Car

With the gas prices going up, everyone is looking for ways to save money at the pump.  Since there haven't been too many new deals popping up today, I decided to take some time and research this important topic.  Below I have posted some of the best deals and/or tips that I found.

I am not a car expert, but I have found these tips from multiple sources.
  •  Check the gas prices online to find the best deal near you.  I like GasBuddy to find the best price, but I also recommend determining if driving a few miles out of the way is worth the money.  I found a great fuel calculator that allows you to enter in the data regarding the station prices and distance.
  • See if any of your memberships offer gas discounts
    • Many BJs and Sam's Clubs have their own gas stations with discounts for members
    • Some grocery stores offer incentives such as $0.10 off per gallon for every $100 you spend
  • Try to buy your gas during the week if you can.  I've noticed that prices seem to go up on Thursdays and down on Tuesdays.  If a holiday is coming up, expect higher prices.
  • Don't grip the pump as tight as possible.  While it might take a few extra seconds to fill up your tank, you will actually get more gas for your money.  When the gas flows faster, some of it will go back into the back flow system.  You are still paying for the gas even if it never reaches your car.
  • Never fill up at a station when the gas truck is there.  When they are refilling the underground tanks at station, all the dirt and grim at the bottom of the tanks is mixing around as the fuel goes from the truck to the tank.  This junk will find its way to your tank.  You will be paying for junk instead of gas and it can clog your injectors which will cause you to lose gas mileage.
  • Make sure your tires are correctly inflated.  Too much or too little air will affect your gas mileage.

Besides tips to help with your gas mileage, there are other ways to save money with your car maintenance.  Regular oil changes and clean air filters are simple ways to keep your car running smoothly and prevent expensive damages to the engine.  If you are like me and don't know how to change your own oil, you can find great deals on oil changes in different places.
  • Check the website of national chain stores for coupons
  • Check the website of your local dealers
    • I once got a $20 iTunes gift card for getting my oil changed at Ford, but I needed a coupon from their website
  • Look in the Sunday paper
  • Check your mail
    • Valpaks and clipper magazines will sometimes have coupons
    • Stores and dealers might send you post cards with specials
  • Look on the back of reciepts
    • I have found coupons for oil changes as low as $14.99 with a free tire rotation from my grocery store
  • Call the 800 number when you have a service done
    • Some auto chains offer discounts on your next service if you take a quick phone survey

Sign-Up for STP's Mailing List - When you sign up, you will get an email with a link to a coupon worth $2 off any STP product.  A few of their fuel additives which clean your injectors are under $2 at Walmart so you will end up getting them for free.

I have also gotten Prestone products for free in the past through rebates.  Next time they offer a rebate, I will be sure to post it.

I've used different additives from the different brands before and saw a difference of about 3-5 miles per gallon which lasted about three tanks worth, for me at least.  I'm not sure if that's a big enough difference to spend the money on the additive vs just filling your tank.  However if it's free, then in my opinion it's worth it.

Free PopChips at Jamba Juice

When you like PopChips on Facebook, you will be able to print a coupon for a free bag. The only catch is that the coupon can only be redeemed at Jamba Juice locations.

I do not have a Jamba Juice near me so I did not print the coupon out.  If you print it, please let me know if a purchase is required for the bag of chips or if you can just walk in and redeem the coupon for your free bag.

New URL - Making Cents of It

After registering the new domain last week, it finally seems to be working.  I am leaving the blogspot domain alone (shopping4dealstoday.blogspot.com) so that people don't get lost if they don't update their bookmarks, but you will notice it automatically forward you to the new domain makingcentsofit.com.

I have also created a new Facebook page and Twitter account to match the new name.  You can add the new pages and remove the old from your lists.  The old Shopping4Deal pages will stay updated but please add the new pages.  While the old pages will continue to automatically update the blog posts, I might only make comments on the new pages (such as the extremely limited time Facebook deals).

In the next few days, I will start updating the old pages with the new email address, Cori@makingcentsofit.com. I am also working on a new template for the blog that better fits our new name.

Questions?  Comments?  Just leave me a comment here on the blog.

Free Google Voice Invite for Students

Google Voice is a great free service that allows you to forward calls from one number to any phone.  Since Google Voice is still in beta testing it is only available by invite.

The good news is they are now offering rushed invites for anyone with an .edu email address.  If you are a student or work at a college you can take advantage of an invite within 24 hours of your request.

They have also been sending rushed invites to people with military emails (.mil).  The military invite program has been going on for a while and I'm not positive it still works, but the link is still there so it's worth a try.

I have been using Google Voice since its predecessor, GrandCentral, so I was able to immediately upgrade my account from the old program when Google Voice began.

While you need to link it to a phone when you sign up, you can set it to never ring or text your phone.  You can then log-in and see your voicemails and SMS messages in a similar fashion to your emails.  When I sign up for free stuff, I always give the Google Voice number so I don't worry about telemarketers and other annoying calls.  For more information about it, check out their page.

Free Download of Reba Duets album

Walmart must really be trying to promote their MP3 store or they're trying to get rid of inventory (can you run out of digital inventory?).  Either way, they are offering the entire Reba Duets for free.

For some reason, it wasn't working in Firefox for me, but I was able to download the songs using IE.
