Free Entry to Any National Park

Whither you live in the north or the south, by the Pacific or the Atlantic, this is a great deal for you.  April 17-25, 2010 is National Park Week here in the United States.  During the week, visitors can enjoy all 392 national parks for free.  Additionally there will be special events planned throughout the parks.

Please note that this is for national parks and not state parks.  If you are not sure about your local area, check the list before you arrive.

Hotel Room for $0.01

This is NOT an April Fool's joke.  Participating Red Roof Inns will be selling one room per day from April 1 - 15, 2010, for $0.01.

The details state that you can only book up to 48 hours in advance.  This is an amazing deal, but I have a feeling it will be very difficult to get.  Please let us know if you were one of the lucky ones.

Hidden Secrets of Broadway

My title might be slightly off when I call these hidden secrets, because this is in fact public information. The reason I call them hidden is because many people, even native New Yorkers, don't know about them.

If you are willing to wait until the day of a show, you will often find the tickets for half price or less.  While this makes it more difficult to plan your vacation with the risk of a show you want being sold out, it also helps to save you money if you're flexible.

When Rent first came out, they always reserved the first two rows until a few hours before showtime when they would sell the tickets for $20.  Thanks to it's popularity, other Broadway shows have embraced similar ideas.  Playbill keeps a current list of shows that offer deals, student rush, and standing room only seating.  Many of these shows offer tickets for under $30.

Another option for discounted Broadway shows is the TDF TKTS Booth which sells tickets for 25-50% off same day shows.

Please stay tuned for future travel tips.  They will all be tagged with the "travel" label.  If you know deals in a city near you, please feel free to email them to me.

When You Have Unused or Expired Coupons

I've heard about this before, but I finally found information to help everyone do it. U.S. military bases allow families to use expired coupons for months past their expiration dates.  For the cost of a stamp, you can help our military families overseas save money when they buy their groceries on base.   They can only accept manufacturer coupons from the newspaper so do not send internet coupons.

When mailing overseas there are two ways to send them.  The first is to mail them to a specific family, however this only works if you personally know people overseas.  The second way is to mail them to the bases' family services.  If you are mailing the coupons to family services, I highly recommend writing somewhere on the envelope "contents: grocery coupons" so that they know what is in it.  Additionally ALL mail to military bases require a return address.  If you do not put a return address on the envelope it will be destroyed and not delivered for the safety of our soldiers.  Although it is overseas, military bases are considered U.S. Territory so it costs the same as domestic mail.

Instead of posting names and addresses that might change as people are transferred, I would like to direct you to this list.  The site states that it updates monthly and list February 2010 as the latest update so it is currently updated.

If you have too many coupons for an envelope (that's a good thing) and need to send them in a larger, package size, envelope you will need to fill out a customs form.  Just list it as coupons with a value of $0 and check the box that says gift.

Online Safety, Privacy, and Other Important Information

Personal Information

When signing up for free offers, you will often need to give personal information such as your name and address. The company cannot send you the free items without an address to mail them to. Under NO circumstance should you ever give your social security number for any reason.

Although I do not collect personal information from my readers, it is possible that Blogger, Google Adsense, or one of the links you click on from my posts will. Technology such as cookies might be used by these third-parties to target their advertisements. I do not have control over this but want you to be aware of it.  Additionally, if I host a contest, I will need information from the winner to send the prize.

Signing Up for Freebie = More Spam?

Spam is email that you did not request and have no way of opting out from receiving.

While you might notice you are getting more emails after signing up for freebies and coupons, these emails are not actually spam. I highly recommend creating a free email address to use when signing up for deals instead of using your personal email address. Sites such as Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo are reliable free email sites.

When you sign up for a free offer, often times clicking submit gives the company permission to add you to their mailing list. Legally there will always be an opt-out option, but it is not always easy to find. Most of the free offers are free because the companies hope it will lead to future sales.

Some offers also require a phone number, but I recommend not giving your real phone number and avoid mobile phone numbers unless it is necessary because similar to how giving your email gives them permission to send you emails, you are giving them permission to call or text. I have a Google Voice number, however it is still in beta stages and not yet open to the public. If you have not already done so, register for the national Do Not Call Registry. You can register any phone number, including cell phones.

Printing Coupons

Most online coupon sites will require you to install special software to print coupons. This software claims to be free of spyware and adware, and does not collect any personal information about the user. I personally use this software and have never had an issue with my computer, but I have read reports from others with different opinions on the issue.  You will also notice that some coupon sites print small text around the border of the coupons which if look closely includes the IP address the coupon was printed from.

For more information on coupons see the Rules of Coupons post.

Virus Protection

So you’ve heard about viruses but have the “it won’t happen to me” complex? Protecting yourself is simple and can cost as little as no money. That’s right, there are perfectly good virus/spyware protection available for free.

I am not claiming to be an expert on this however I requested some information from my IT friend to provide you with options.  He recommends Microsoft Security Essentials which is provided free by Microsoft to all Windows’ users. You can schedule automatic updates and system scans with it to protect your computer.

AVG is another brand of protection that provides free basic protection.

A third option is to keep an eye out for sales and rebates at stores.  I have found year subscriptions to some virus protections for free after rebate.

A Second Chance Deal for Toy Story 1 & 2

If you missed my post earlier this week about the great pre-order deal at Toys'R'Us there is a change to get a second deal on Toy Story 1 & 2.

Target has a price match policy so all you have to do is bring the Toys'R'Us flier with you to Target, you should be able to get both movies for $16.99 each.  Additionally Target has an instant discount at the register for $10 off when you buy both movies.  The register should take the $10 off even with the price adjustment although your Target might not follow the corporate policy about this.

If you are planning to buy Toy Story 1 & 2 this week, I recommend searching through your old VHS' to find the UPC for both movies. If you enter them on Disney Movie Rewards, you will get a $10 coupon for each ($20 total on both).  Otherwise, you can print a coupon for $5 each.

The pre-order deal at TRU included The Princess & the Frog, but this deal is only for the Toy Story movies.  However, I think you will still be pleased with the final price.

Summary of the deal.
Toy Story - $16.99 - $10 (coupon) = $6.99
Toy Story 2 - $16.99 - $10 (coupon) = $6.99
Target's Instant deal at the register when you buy two = $10 off

Total for both movies = $3.98 or $1.99 each

Both Toy Story 1 & 2 will include free movie cash to see Toy Story 3 when it comes to theaters later this year.

Get a free 60-day trial membership to BJ's Wholesale. They have lots of great deals and they're giving you two full months to see everything they offer and decide if you want to join. If you pre-order at Toys'R'Us you'll also get a $15 coupon off any Disney movie for pre-ordering.

Some sites are also reporting a current deal at TRU for $4.99 off any Disney movie. In total, you can get the three movies for $13.98. The Toy Story movies should also include "movie cash" to see Toy Story 3 when it comes out.

Adding one more detail to this deal. If you choose the Princess and the Frog, here is an additional $5 off and you'll get a free jewelry box with the purchase.

If you're planning to buy the Princess and the Frog Blu-Ray, there is a different coupon for $10 instead of $5.

There are also a bunch of mail-in rebates for Princess and the Frog. The movie has two proofs of purchase so you can't do all the rebates, but it does give you options.

  • Band-aids has a $5 rebate when you buy two packs of bandaids and the movie. Target had some band-aid coupons last week, but I didn't see them on the website today.
  • Success Rice has a $5 rebate when you buy two packs of rice and the movie.
  • Frog tape has a $5 rebate when you buy a roll of their tape and the movie.

Summary of the deal.
Toy Story - $16.99 - $10 (coupon) = $6.99
Toy Story 2 - $16.99 - ($10 coupon) = $6.99
The Princess & the Frog - $19.99 - $15 (pre-ordering Toy Story 1&2) - $4.99 (TRU Disney Deal) - $5 (coupon) = $5 profit

Total for all three movies = $8.98 or $2.99 each
